Poila Baishakh
The celebration of Poila Baishakh is observed as the first day of the Bengali New Year, which falls on 15th April. People begin this auspicious day by offering prayers and puja to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. This is considered as the best day to take new business ventures.
The accounts entries in ‘halkhata’, the new account-books begin after offering pujas.
On this day Bengalis engage themselves in celebration; it is the time for them to gorge on various sweet dishes and special Bengali delicacies. All Bengali people wear new clothes on this day and various cultural programs are held almost in all localities. Most of the young women and men are seen in the popular dress-combination of white sari with red border and in dhuti and kurta, respectively.
