The festival of Janmashtami, also known as Gokulashtami, is celebrated to mark the birthday of Lord Krishna, who emerged in this world to bestow his blessings on the common people. He is the eighth son of King Vasudeva and Devaki Devi. After his birth inside the prison of Mathura, he was immediately shifted to Gokul by his father, in the stormy night, in order to escape the wrath of his maternal uncle, Kansa.
This festival of Janmashtami is observed by Hindus all over the world by offering pujas to Lord Krishna, keeping fasts, wearing new clothes, participating in ‘bhajans’, and in preparing various sweet dishes.
Lord Krishna is popular for his association with various romantic tales and is believed to be the manifestation of joy at different levels of life.
