Holi:

“Holi” or “Dol” according to the Bengalis is observed in spring, the festival of colors. During this time the air is filled with misty smell of “Basanta”. In Shantiniketan celebration of the famous “Basanto Utsob” holds high importance among tourists from all over the world. Holi is celebrated in memory of Lord Vishnu’s ardent devotee Prahlad’s escape from Holika, demon Hirannakashipu’s sister.

Holi is celebrated among people from different sections of society as they tend to forget all grudges against each other and are cemented in a strong bond of love.

It is a unique festival where people shower colored water and play with dust color or ‘aabir’ among themselves. The colors are assumed to have therapeutic usage in prevention of certain diseases which tend to occur in the spring season.
