Durga Puja is the greatest festival of Bengali and is celebrated with great pomp. Ma Durga is worshipped for four days and the days are divided as Shasti, Saptami, Astami and Nabami and the fifth day is on Dashami She is immersed in the holy Ganges. Maha shasti is the “bodhon” of Ma Durga.
The word Durga means incomprehensible. She is a form of Shakti, worshipped for her gracious as well as terrifying aspects. She is the mother of universe and the symbol of female power.
These four days Bengalees enjoy to the hilt. Clad in new dresses all are in a festive and celebration mood. The dhaki drumming the dhak, the fragrance of incense stick add splendour to this occasion. Everyone with a heavy heart bid adieu to Maa on the day of Dashami.
