Bihu Festival of Assam

The legendary Bihu brings enormous joy and the spirit among the rough and tough people of the hill area of Assam.

Bihu is the national festival of Assam which is celebrated by the Assamese people. This festival is celebrated thrice in a year with different perspective.

The first is Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu celebrated in April which marks the beginning of New Year and agricultural season. People wear new clothes; arrange cultural nights, like Bihu Nritya, make different types of sweets like pithas—til pitha, ketli pitha, bora chawlor pitha etc.

Second one, Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is celebrated in January and this marks the end of harvesting period. They celebrate it by buffalo fight, community feast etc.

The third is Kati Bihu or Kongaali Bihu which falls in October and it signifies the completion of sowing and transplanting of paddies.
